PO Green is absolutely correct. Auxiliaries in uniform deserve and should get the same respect from the public as regular MOS. During last Sunday's Indian Day Parade, I was directly pedestrian traffic with large numbers of people. When the light changed and it was time to hold people back, a few stray people escaped by directive. A regular MOS quickly stopped one clearly irate pedestrian and said to him "didn't that officer ask you to stop and wait? You follow his command."

Greetings everyone from the other side of the planet. I agree with Green. In order to be the best we must also adhere to a higher standard of being. We are in a position to be role models for other auxiliaries, not just citywide, but also NationWide. We must always set the standard higher, and it is up to us to police ourselves and teammates to assure that no one steps out of line. Keep up the great work for those of you who are doing it. TEAM – PO GREEN is CORRECT! I may be leaving but I have a few choice words before I go. I have a few supervisors and APO’s in my sights and trust me you will hear me loud and clear. You need to treat EVERYONE with dignity and respect. Start teaching not bashing…motivating not deflating. We may be paramilitary in structure but that doesn’t mean talking down to or treating members of this unit or members of the public as if you were a drill sergeants. We are here to help each other and help the public. Remember your CPR: COURTESY…PROFESSIONALISM…RESPECT!!! We are the CTTF…act like the elite family we are meant to be.

P.O. Green, I completely concur with your statement on Interpersonal Communications Skills (IPC). It is NOT what you said, but HOW you say it to the general public or for that matter, in my profession, to incarcerated inmates. It’s a matter of giving respect to get respect-- a two way street. And Yes, we are all held to a higher standard then private citizens in our actions: both on and off the job! IPC skills come with maturity and common sense. These TWO traits are a plus in our business. Imagine being “locked in” with 48 inmates for eight hours a day, five days a week becoming responsible for their safety, well-being and for delivery of services on the housing unit. There are no physical barriers separating the officer from the inmates. In situation as this, IPC skills, patience, tact, forbearance and diplomacy goes a long way in making the tour go by smooth without any troubles

The topic of aggressive/buffy Auxiliary Officers is discussed almost everytime the program comes into a conversation. Truthfully, aggressive/buffy Officers, whether auxiliary or regulars are a nightmare for your coordinators or supervisors. From a management point of view, I know that their hearts are in the right place but their actions are completely detrimental to all. When I say all, I mean all. Their partners, their coordinators, the program, the city. Why? Perception! If one of you decides to get out of the van and scream at a motorist to move and everyone is watching, well, then all of you are seen as aggressive knuckleheads that do not know how to speak to people. The program is seen as a failure and it makes your coordinators look horrible. BTW, this happens a lot in this unit. To those doing it, why? Why do you think that you must yell and scream at people? Is that how you think the job gets done? If your answer is yes, then you are wrong. Remember, we are held to a higher standard. We are already in uniform and have the upper hand. No reason to talk down to people. Just ask them to move. You will be surprised, they might just do what you ask. Telling someone isn't always the answer. Ask them. Use your heads. If the person your screaming at recognizes that you are an auxiliary and tells you to go to hell, what can you do? Answer: Flag a cab down and ask him to take you to hell beacause you have no enforcement ability. Do not bluff!!! It makes you look stupid. It will also make you feel stupid. YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE JUST BY BEING OUT THERE! REMEMBER THAT! Omnipresence is our biggest weapon. You all play a huge role in that. Uniform visibility!!! Things are less likely to go wrong when you are around. Don't look for trouble in law enforcement. Believe me, it will come to you at the right time. No need to kick the sleeping bear. 85% of being a cop is helping or serving the public. 15% is actual enforcement. That is a fact. 85% is answering questions, just being out there, etc.... WHERE IS THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING? That type of stuff. Just being out there comforts civilians, deters terrorist, etc. YOU GUYS HAVE NO IDEA HOW IMPORTANT YOUR ROLE IS WHEN YOU PLAY IT CORRECTLY!!! THE SMALLEST THINGS THAT YOU DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE! I just want you to think about this when speaking to the public and eachother. None of you are better than the next! NONE! If you are a supervisor, your job is to make your officers better. Your job is not to talk down to them. Sometimes it is necessary, but not in front of others. IF I SEE ANYONE BEING A BULLY, I WILL SHOW YOU WHAT A BULLY REALLY IS!!! THAT INCLUDES DEMOTION AND/OR TERMINATION. THIS GOES FOR EVERYONE!!! The side of our vehicles say it all. COURTESY, PROFESSIONALISM, RESPECT. Start showing it or I will start embarassing you like you are embarassing this unit. Why am I posting this? Too many incidents witnessed by me, fellow members of the team, or coming from the CTTF C.O.'s office. START ACTING LIKE THE PROFESSIONALS THAT YOU ARE. I wasn't a big fan of Wrestling growing up but I love the ROCK. One of his most famous quotes was, "KNOW YOUR ROLE." Well, know it and embrace it. It is an important one. The smallest things you do make a difference!
