Thoughts about placing the flag on one of the arms or perhaps on the back?

TR: indeed a Rough Rider
06-08-2012 10:56:33 AM EST

When the Rough Riders shipped out to Cuba, there was not enough room in the transport ship for their horses, so they fought as infantry. TR brought his horse though, and led the famous charge up San Juan Hill astride. This was brave, though foolhardy, as it made him an excellent target for enemy fire. This has fascinating parallels with George Washington who rode at the front of his Continental troops to within 30 yards of the British line at the Battle of Princeton. He personally gave the order to fire, and when the British line broke after the first volley, he led the cavalry pursuit of the fleeing Redcoats, calling out ''This is a fine fox chase my lads.'' GW was, famously, a fox hunter AND SO WAS TR. In fact, GW had helped pay to bring a pack of foxhounds from England to hunt in what is now Hempstead, Long Island, when he was a loyal Officer in King George's Colonial Virginia Militia before the outbreak of the Revolution. That hunt is believed to be the direct predecessor of the Meadow Brook Hunt (which existed until the '40s.) That is the hunt with which Long Islander Teddy Roosevelt broke his arm in a fall from his horse, remounted and, to the horror of his companions, continued to hunt - jumping over fences with the bone of a compound fracture protruding from his arm. Rough Rider indeed.

I was not aware that the PC's Office had TR's desk in it. How many of you would like to see that? I will write a formal request to visit the PC's office if any of you are interested. I do not know if we would get the authorization, but I will give it a shot. He seems to like this unit.

TR's fingerprints are all over this Police Dept. as well as The Citywide Traffic Task Force. Read the link on the side of the page that describes the CTTF Unit Patch. Let's Keep the tradition alive. I love it. Let's go Rough Riders!

One of America's most colorful Presidents, TR had also served as President of the New York City Board of Police Commissioners. In that post, he legendarily cleaned up much of the corruption in the Department and roamed the city at night catching cops asleep on their posts. In 1901, then Governor of the State of New York, TR signed into law a bill replacing the Police Board with a single Commissioner invested with the power to run the Department on his own. Despite that power being conferred by State law, the PC is appointed by the Mayor of the City of New York and serves at the Mayor's pleasure. The current PC's office is reportedly furnished with the desk used by TR as President of the Police Board, as well as a portrait of TR.

The Rough Riders is the name bestowed on the 1st United States VOLUNTEER Cavalry, one of three such regiments raised in 1898 for the Spanish-American War and the only one of the three to see action. The United States Army was weakened and left with little manpower after the American Civil War roughly thirty years prior. As a result, President William McKinley called upon 1,250 volunteers to assist in the war efforts.[1] It was also called "Wood's Weary Walkers" after its first commander, Colonel Leonard Wood, as an acknowledgment of the fact that despite being a cavalry unit they ended up fighting on foot as infantry. Wood's second in command was former assistant secretary of the United States Navy, Theodore Roosevelt, a man who had pushed for American involvement in Cuban independence. When Colonel Wood became commander of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade, the Rough Riders then became "Roosevelt's Rough Riders." That term was familiar in 1898, from Buffalo Bill who called his famous western show "Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World." The Rough Riders were mostly made of native Americans, college athletes, cowboys, and ranchers. THEY WERE VOLUNTEERS JUST LIKE YOU!!! Take a minute and read about The Rough Riders and Teddy Roosevelts involvement. Why? Teddy Roosevelt had a lot to do with the formation of what is now known as the CTTF. The name has changed but the Mission has remained the same from day 1. I want you all to truly understand that you are part of an ongoing tradition. What you do today is part of a proud history in this city. I don't want anyone calling this team Green's Marines anymore. I want you to be known as the ROUGH RIDERS!!!! Every team has a name. You are the CTTF Rough Riders!!!! They were volunteers and so are you. They were Teddy Roosevelts Cavalry and so are you. WE ARE THE MODERN DAY ROUGH RIDERS!!!! Teddy Roosevelts residence on Sagamore Hill is only a small train ride away from Manhattan. It is located in Oyster Bay where I lived for a few years and volunteered with the local Fire Dept. That's right, I was a volunteer as well. The Roosevelt Home is under renovation right now, but as soon as it reopens, we will be taking a trip as a team to visit it. FIELD TRIP!!! So, Congrats on our teams name. Congrats to the "CTTF Rough Riders."

It has been a long and tough week here at CTTF. We have been swamped with investigations and regular command operations. We attended the Auxiliary graduation, hosted a supervisors meeting and a test review. The pressure has been on. Today the members of the Auxiliary Basic Training Course went to APS to take their final exam. They all passed. The passing of the final is not the reason that I am so proud of this particular class. It is the way they came together as a team that makes me proud. It is the way that they met outside of class during their private time to help each other. This is the brotherhood/sisterhood that makes all of us in Law Enforcement special. All of the members of the BTC class Of 2012 should be commended for the accomplishment of passing the test but more so for the way they worked together as a team to meet that goal. I am very proud of you all! You made all the work that we did this week worth it. It's that type of MOTIVATION, DEDICATION, AND PRIDE that keeps me moving forward. That is the type of attitude that SETS THE STANDARD. Congrats!!!!!! HOOOOOOOOOORAH!!!!!

I periodically check this site because I am what they call a buff and I like to see what other departments are up to. I found this site after logging on to officer.com. I have been an Auxiliary Police officer for 14 years with Somerville, PD. We assist the Boston PD on many events like the you seem to handle. The reason why I felt the need to post on this sight is because it is obvious to me and apparently others that the Coordinator of this Unit (We call them Commanding Officers) is very much into his job and cares very much about all if you. Officer Green seems to put 100% of his energy into the command. If he is asking for help, why isn't anyone responding? It seems from the many other forums that Officer Green is one of the best if not the best Coordinator/Commanding Officer in the City. I wish we had people with the amount of positive energy up here in Mass. You really don't know how lucky you are. My message to Officer Green: Anytime you feel like catching a Red Sox vs. Yankee game at Fenway, look us up. We are big fans of yours. Not the Yanks. Take care.
