To: Police Officers Green and Navarro, A/Capt. Quinones, A/Lt. Lewis. I've been aware of the Arlington ceremony for a couple of years due to my involvement with the TSBA, but last Saturday was my first opportunity to attend. While the overall event was fittingly impressive, I couldn't help but notice the very substantial contribution made to the solemnity and conviviality of the occasion by the numbers, sharp appearance and demeanor of the CTTF team. You are to be congratulated. While I usually supervise patrol on Thursday nights, I regret that business in Amsterdam will keep me on the other side of the Atlantic during tonight's PBMS deployment in my home precinct. Nonetheless, I trust that any CTTF personnel who are able to attend will be made welcome in the One. Fidelis Ad Mortem.

The heart of a hero is fueled not by incentive, but rather by passion. Some of you volunteer for this department to gain experience to become a police officer. Some of you volunteer because you enjoy the act of giving. Sometimes we encounter situations that discourage us from our call to serve with no pay. When this happens, remember the words I've quoted above.

Sorry I had to miss the Police Arlington memorial. Here's an article from today's NY DAILY NEWS: Keeping a little-known piece of NYPD history alive in annual memorial at Cypress Hills’ Police Arlington Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and PBA President Patrick Lynch spoke at the fourth annual Arlington ceremony The Arlington, or Police Gardens, is a little-known burial ground created more than 100 years ago for members of the Metropolitan Police Department. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch and others addressed the crowd gathered under warm sunny skies. Dan Carione, a retired deputy inspector, said he is hoping supporters will join together to help with a full restoration of the site. “Everyone spoke about the importance of remembering those who came before us,” said Carione, who has helped organize the annual memorial with retired NYPD Lt. Joe Wolff, former head of the NYPD Traffic Squad Benevolent Association. “It was brief and dignified.” The massive bronze statue of a Metropolitan Police Officer was swiped from the site over 40 years ago. The bronze plaques that surrounded the statue’s base disappeared as well. The grounds are now controlled by the NYPD Honor Legion, which has shown little interest in renovating the site since supporters started their efforts back in 2009. But Carione said there is a plan to get all interested parties together. “We are hoping for a historical restoration of the site and to work with the police pension fund to solicit new interments for destitute, retired police officers,” he said. (On a personal note, I was hoping to present a more detailed report on the ceremony but my car overheated - leaving me stranded by the Jamaica Ave. gate. Kudos to the great staff of Cypress Hills Cemetery and Mike Porcelli of Central Automotive in Glendale for helping me out. And I will continue to follow the story of this little-known, historic burial ground.)

CTTF and Highway Troops: The CTTF Auxiliary Unit is requesting your assistance once again for this years visit from our Navy, Coast Guard and Marines during Fleet Week. Fleet Week is held in Manhattan along 12th Ave between W 46st to W 59st. Piers 88-94 are utilized by the Military as well as the normal cruise lines that ship out of these terminals. This will be a highly populated and visited area during the week of May 25th- June 1. The ships will be providing tours along with the Intrepid. Traffic is a nightmare and crossing the pedestrians is a very important part of the week. CTTF will be monitoring the bike path and crossings and we need Highway to be out on 12th Ave SLOWING MOTORIST DOWN, so that we do not have any incidents like we did last year when a U.S. Marine was killed while he was crossing 12th Ave. Our mere presence will be a huge assistance to our Troops and the civilians visiting these fine ships. Believe it or not, us being out there is also a message to any terrorist that may be thinking about trying something. BTW, The Coast Guard Eagle will be in attendance and I will be setting up a private tour for both Highway and CTTF. Details will be held daily including the weekends. Help on Memorial Day Weekend will be huge. It is a great weekend and it will be fun for all of us. The times will be posted on your individual unit Patrol Calendars on the left side of this website. If you are able to assist, please contact A/DI Johnson. Again, I want to thank all the members of the NYPD Auxiliary Highway Patrol for continuing to do a great job day in and day out. I also want to thank you all that have assisted us during the past few details in Manhattan. THE TRANSPORTATION BUREAU AUXILIARY UNITS CONTINUE TO SET THE STANDARD FOR THIS PROGRAM!!!! KEEP IT UP.

Team, Thank you everyone for participating in the memorial service yesterday. You payed your respects to those who have come before you. 6 volunteer offers were laid to rest in this historic spot who originally rode with Theodore Roosevelt. This burial group dates back to the War of 1812 and the Civil War. You make me PROUD to be part of this unit.

Today, You all showed the TRUE HEART of this unit. You rolled in 3 vans deep, jumped out, and marched in as MOTIVATED, DEDICATED, AND PROUD MEMBERS of the CTTF Auxiliary Unit. Once again, SETTING THE STANDARD!!! The Police Commisioner commented on how squared away all of you looked. He said, "nice looking group", "very professional looking." He mentioned it several times. Chief Tuller and Chief Cassidy were blown away by you AGAIN. As I followed the 3 vans back to the base, a great feeling came over me of PRIDE!!! I know that you all felt it too. You all continue to shock APS and this Police Department. YOU CONTINUE TO PROVE THE CLAIMS OF YOU BEING "THE UNIT." YOU MAKE THIS UNIT WHAT IT IS AND WHAT IT IS GOING TO BE!!! This Units MOTIVATION IS LIKE NO OTHER. YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!!! I was very proud of all of you today. I AM SO PROUD TO BE ONE OF YOUR COORDINATORS. THANK YOU ALL FOR SERVING THIS DEPARTMENT AND BEING MEMBERS OF THIS UNIT!!! FIDELIS AD MORTEM

We at the CTTF have become a family and families are special. One of our Family members lost his dear Grandmother this week. Our thoughts and prayers are with the DeDier family at their time of need. A/Sgt. DeDier has advised us that the services will be held in Georgia this weekend so he is on his way there. Please say a prayer for him. He was very close to his Grandmother and needs his CTTF family right now. God Bless and we love ya Diva!!!

Good afternoon everyone. This is a reminder that tomorrows event will require Class A uniforms. Last year we looked the best and took the entire front of the formation. Last year wel also had 16 attendees from our unit. We hope to beat that this year. This is yet another big event and a proud event for us. See you guys tomorrow.

Our numbers for Saturday have grown to almost 30. The response in the last few days has been intense. We are planning to have a few of you WORK THE DETAIL AND assist Officer Navarro and myself with the parking, and the rest will dress in class A uniforms and attend the ceremony. We are planning on sending 3-4 vans out. This should be a great weekend. On Sunday, we have a few details going as well. The Ship Terminal Detail will start at 9:30 and the 369th Veterans Parade will be at 1200. The 369th Veterans Parade is a great parade to work. Research the men who fought with the 369th and you will be glad to work this parade and meet these fine Americans. When you all get together tomorrow and roll into that detail, you will all feel that sense of PRIDE! STAND TALL! SHOW YOUR MOTIVATION. SHOW YOUR DEDICATION. SHOW YOUR PRIDE. Let them all know, WE ARE THE CTTF!!!!

THURSDAY: Troops, It is Thursday night in Manhattan, 75 degrees and busy as hell in Midtown. Let's turnout a large patrol the next couple of nights and let's show the city who we are on Saturday. My list for Saturday shows about 17 people attending out of 63 that we have that are currently available for patrol. I feel that there is a negative Morale shift in the works and we need to address it. So here it goes, GET YOUR BUTTS IN HERE AND START MAKING A DIFFERENCE!!! I'm glad that we were able to talk about this. Saturday will be a great morale builder for this unit. This is a team, and like any other team, there are ups and downs. What makes us different is the way we continue to GET UP and move forward every time we fall down. I have said it before, "nothing is going to derail this train." I mean it. We may get knocked down for many reasons, but WE WILL CONTINUE TO GET UP AND IN DOING SO, GROW STRONGER!!! TROOPS, MORALE MUST INCREASE, WE MUST STAY MOTIVATED, STAY DEDICATED AND WE MUST ALWAYS BE PROUD, FOR WE ARE THE CTTF AUXILIARY UNIT!!!! Fidelis Ad Mortem!!!

A/P.O. Stauber   'Fourth annual memorial shines a light on forgotten police cemetery'
05-15-2012 12:30:53 PM EST

This is the time of year when the Police Arlington, a long-forgotten burial ground at Cypress Hills Cemetery created for New York City police officers, finds its proper place in the spotlight. On Saturday, the barren site will be filled with flags and flowers. Hundreds of people, including dignitaries, active and retired police officers and other supporters will visit for a somber 11 a.m. ceremony. For the fourth year in a row, a dedicated group of volunteers have organized the memorial ceremony as they continue their efforts to refurbish the once-proud site. “My hope is to get a historical restoration,” said Dan Carione, a retired NYPD deputy inspector. “It should also be opened up for its intended purpose to allow destitute, retired police officers a final, dignified resting place.” The Police Arlington was established more than 100 years ago for members of the Metropolitan Police Force of New York. Early photos show its impressive beginnings. A bronze statue of a police officer stood upon a large pedestal. Plaques in the shape of a police badge surrounded the base. The statue and the plaques were stolen over 40 years ago and never replaced. Ownership of the plots were transferred to the NYPD Honor Legion. Back in 2009, Carione and NYPD Lt. Joe Wolff, who headed the NYPD Traffic Squad Benevolent Association, worked to organize the first memorial. Over the years, the service has grown and attracted more participants. And supporters of the site were thrilled when Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, a student and booster of NYPD history, attended in 2010 and 2011. But despite offers of donations and support from artists who want to replace the statue and retired cops wanting to help spruce up the site, the NYPD Honor Legion has not taken any action. Officials from the Honor Legion have told The News they are more focused on raising money for scholarships and a widows and children’s fund. But they have also been reluctant to let willing volunteers raise money or work on restoration efforts. “I’m looking forward to making progress,” Wolff said. “We hope the Honor Legion has plans to move forward.” Wolff has spent the last few months chronicling the site’s history on a Facebook site “NYPD Police Arlington Cypress Hills Gardens.” It has gathered more than 1,000 followers since launching earlier this year. He pointed out that seven police officers killed in the line of duty are buried there. It’s also the final resting place of Patrolman Henry Haywood, one of Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders. “We really want to put this back on track to be a national monument,” said Wolff. “For the first time in history, the civilian population recognized policing for the honorable profession it is.” Saturday’s memorial is a department-authorized event, which means police officers can attend and wear their uniforms. “It grew from about 100 people the first year to over 450 people last year,” said Carione. “This year we are expecting even more.” lcolangelo@nydailynews.com
