A/Sgt. Sterler   Today is COAST GUARD DAY

Most of you know that our intrepid Coordinator, in addition to serving the City, serves the Nation as an officer in the United States Coast Guard Reserve. The USCG was founded on August 4th, 1790 under its original name, the Revenue Marine, by the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton (who was, like his own mentor George Washington, our own patron Theodore Roosevelt and certain other Rough Riders, a fox hunter.) Its first responsibility was interdicting ships smuggling untaxed goods into the new nation - which was vital because, until the income tax was established to pay for World War I, customs duty revenue was the main source of funds for national defense and all other Federal expenses. In 1915 the then Revenue Cutter Service was merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service into the U.S. Coast Guard by President Woodrow Wilson (who was NOT a fox hunter, but his Asst. Secretary of the Navy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, was.) The combined service then protected both revenue and lives in the nation's coastal waters, continuing to this day when it guards against many threats as a vital component of the Department of Homeland Security. Let's toast the additional service of both Det. Green and APO Robinson (a Coast Guard Auxiliary officer) on the 224th anniversary of the USCG.

APO Yakubova A.   NY cop credits Good Samaritans for saving his life
08-01-2014 8:52:46 PM EST

UTICA, N.Y. — A Utica police officer is crediting two civilians for saving his life during a scuffle with a suspect. The Utica Observer-Dispatch reports Officer John Lomonico responded to an alarm going off at a residence Thursday and witnessed a man’s legs sticking out of the home’s window. The man – 43-year-old Ronald Flagg – was wielding a crow bar and fled as Officer Lomonico attempted to take him into custody. Officer Lomonico tackled Flagg after a foot pursuit and began struggling with him on the ground. Passerby Stanley Markis witnessed the battle and noticed Flagg was carrying a handgun, according to the report. Markis stepped in – attempting to grab the gun which then fell on the ground. Markis was able to kick the weapon away from Flagg as he attempted to retrieve it. Flagg then went for Officer Lomonico’s weapon, when a second civilian, Jack Carter, jumped in to help subdue the suspect. Officer Lomonico was treated for a knee injury in the incident and credits the pair of Good Samaritans for preventing a bad situation from becoming far worse. Flagg was charged with felony possession of a weapon, two counts of felony attempted possession of a weapon, felony possession of stolen property, and misdemeanor resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration, according to the report. People like us try to help police all the time to bring justice. We are here to help N.Y.P.D. everyday when we put our CTTF auxiliary uniform on. Always be proud for who you are and what you represent for this unit!
