A police officer who was critically injured last weekend while responding to a mattress fire in a Brooklyn apartment building succumbed to his injuries Wednesday, Police Commissioner William J. Bratton said, noting that the father of four "died trying to save others." Dennis Guerra, 38, who had more than seven years with the New York Police Department and was the son of a police detective, was pronounced dead at a hospital in the Bronx, Bratton said. His partner, Rosa Rodriguez, who also responded to the fire Sunday in the Coney Island public housing building, remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition, Bratton said.

NYPD Forgotten History New York City's First Police Officer to Die in a Fire... Det. George Trenchard He is not honored by the department By Michael Bosak Det. George Trenchard Assigned to the ‘Office of the Chief of Police’ NYC Municipal Police Dept. Severely Burned Fighting a Fire May 31, 1853 Died June 2, 1853 There was a fire in the basement of a private house on Essex St. between Delancey and Rivington Streets at approximately 0600 hrs on May 31, 1853. Shadow Trenchard, while fighting the fire, fell through a grating into the basement of the fire building and received a contusion to the back of the head, plus other injuries and was very badly burned. George Trenchard was a volunteer fireman with FDNY Hose Co. # 16 There was no paid fire department. He died three days later on June 2, 1853. -- NOTE: Sections 11 and 39 of the 1846 Rules & Regulations for the N.Y.C. Municipal Police mandated that police officers were responsible for "Protecting Property" and Section 107 stated that all on or off duty police officer were required to "endeavor to extinguish or subdue the flames.." at all fires. Both the volunteer "FDNY" and the paid New York City Municipal Police Department marched in Trenchard’s “Funeral Parade” down Broadway to the Bowery. The funeral procession began at West 4th Street and proceeding down Broadway to Fulton Street with both the N.Y.C. Municipal Police Department and the fire department escorting the casket. At Fulton Street the firemen left the parade and lined both sides of Broadway down to the Bowery. The Police Department then with Trenchard’s family escorted the casket from this point on down to the Bowery. Det. Trenchard is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly - in his infinite wisdom - decided that Det. George Trenchard died as a fireman. He is not honored by the NYPD. The FDNY will only recognize paid firemen as having died in the line of duty. He is not honored by the fire department. ----------------- NYPD's First Black Employee to Die While Performing His Duties “Colored Steward” Charles H. Berry died a fiery and horrifying death aboard the department's first steamboat: ‘The Seneca’ He is not honored by the department By Michael Bosak NYPD “Colored Steward” Charles H. Berry 24th Precinct It is only in the last decade or so that the NYPD has started to honor civilian employees of the department who have died while performing their assigned duties. In the mid 19th century the NYPD's 24th Precinct or ‘Harbor Police’ operated under the same rules and customs as a United States Navy warship. All police officers and the civilian crew members lived on the Seneca 24 x 7, except when granted leave of absence. The Harbor police, in all probability, was the most dangerous job on the department. Wherever the boat went, the entire command went. On March 30th, 1880 the first black to be killed on the NYPD was burned to death aboard the Seneca a little before 0400 hrs. Charles H. Berry was employed by the NYPD as a "colored steward." The Seneca was tied up to a pier at East 16th Street and the East River when its woodwork caught fire, most probably started by a stove that had been left burning all night or a whale oil lamp that was used for lighting aboard the boat. The Seneca was having her boiler repaired. The Seneca regularly carried 28 police officers of all ranks and a civilian crew. Sgt. Obed Firth at the time was in command of the boat, absent the precinct's commanding officer who had been granted leave. 6 patrolmen were on the boat with Sgt. Firth. James Jones, a cook (colored) was also on board - all others having been granted leave. Patrolmen Patrick H Kelly and Robert J. Vail were also severely burnt. That fire was the death knell for the Seneca. She was totally destroyed in a matter of minutes and then sold for scrap.

“A true hero is not someone who thinks about doing what is right, but one that simply does what is right without thinking!” -Kevin Heath- Detective Martin T. Green once posted that quote here a while back and it was the Perfect quote for me of a Hero. A Hero like P.O Dennis Guerra, Rest in peace. My heroes are those who risk their lives every day to protect our world and make it a better place - police, firefighters and members of our armed forces.

Officer Dies of Injuries From Coney Island Fire Allegedly Set by "Bored" Boy: Police   RIP P.O Dennis Guerra
04-09-2014 9:40:50 AM EST

A veteran NYPD officer overcome by smoke and carbon monoxide responding to a fire in Coney Island allegedly set by a 16-year-old boy has died, police say. Dennis Guerra, 38, had been in critical condition since the fire Sunday at an apartment building on Surf Avenue. He and fellow officer Rosa Rodriguez, 36, got stuck in an elevator that filled with smoke. Both officers, who are members of the force's housing bureau, were found unconscious. Guerra, a married father of three and seven-year NYPD veteran, died shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday, police say. Mayor de Blasio said Guerra was an exemplary officer who went to save people in need. He called him a good man and a brave officer, and vowed to stand by his family. Rodriguez remains in critical condition at a hospital. Teenager Marcell Dockery was arrested Monday on assault, reckless endangerment and arson charges in connection with the fire, which originated from a mattress in the building. It's not clear if he has an attorney, nor was it known if he would face additional charges following Guerra's death. Police say Dockery told detectives he lit the mattress on fire because he was bored. They say he said he tried to put out the fire and warn residents as the flames spread. Five people suffered minor injuries, including two firefighters, authorities said.
