Rain today. I am authorizing duty jackets over your dress uniforms due to today's weather. Do not let this rain deter you from getting the job done today. Let's stand tall together and pay tribute to our fallen. Remember, lunch to follow at the Blarney Stone.

What hospital are you at?

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I got increasingly sick this week to the point that my doctor has now had me admitted to the hospital. (On the upside, at least my hip and foot are improving nicely, heh). It seems I won't be able to make it to tomorrow's ceremony after all, but I know you will represent this unit with pride and honor.

On Saturday, retired and active police officers are set to gather at the Police Arlington in Cypress Hills Cemetery at 11 a.m. for a somber annual remembrance ceremony. And for the first time in years, plans are in the works to restore at least some portions of the little-known NYPD burial ground on the Brooklyn-Queens border. The once-grand site was pillaged decades ago when vandals stole bronz...e plaques and a statue. Officials from the NYPD Honor Legion said this week they are planning to replace some of the plaques. Replacing the massive statue of a Metropolitan Police officer — which mysteriously disappeared in the 1960s — is another story. But the announcement marks some progress in the four-year campaign by a group of dedicated volunteers to get some attention for the site by the Honor Legion. “I’m encouraged they are looking to become active,” said Dan Carione, a retired NYPD deputy inspector, who has helped lead efforts to restore the site since 2009. “But restoring the site back to what it was historically is not the preference of any individual, it’s an obligation of what we owe to the history of the site,” he said. Andrew Siroka, executive director of the Honor Legion, said the group is replacing the plaques but is not sure if they will be installed for the ceremony on Saturday. “If we don’t have the plaques installed, we’re hoping to have some kind of representation, said Siroka. “People will be able to see what’s going to be there.” The site was established more than 100 years ago for members of the Metropolitan Police Force of New York. Several police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty are buried there, including Patrolman Henry Haywood, one of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has attended the ceremonies and supports a revival of the site. While supporters have received numerous offers from artisans who want to build a replacement statue, those decisions are solely in the hands of the Honor Legion. The icy relations between the Honor Legion and the volunteers seems to be thawing a bit. This year, the Honor Legion is co-sponsoring the memorial service with the Traffic Squad Benevolent Association. Siroka pledged the group is working on a “respectful and decent restoration” within budget constraints. “Right now, a flagpole is going on top of that pedestal,” he said. “You have to remember the tombstones are the actual history.” Meanwhile, Carione encouraged active and retired law enforcement officers as well as interested members of the public to attend the Saturday ceremony to show respect for the fallen and support for a vital piece of NYPD history. “It’s a brief and dignified service to the memories of our history and our deceased,” he said.

Thanks everyone for the greetings. It was definitely an exciting moment when APO Brown and I, along with 92 other sisters and brothers were officially recognized as APO and we finally became part of the NYPD family. However, the London police attack reminds us as part of the uniformed unit, we are consistently the main target of criminals and terriorists. So everyone please be proud, be motivated, and most importantly, BE VIGILANT AND SAFE! We r the CTTF!

A British Soldier was killed in broad daylight in view of many people yesterday when 2 Terrorists attacked him with knives, ultimately decapitating him while yelling political statements. The threat to military and law enforcement is very real. This act was carried out on a busy London street. This could happen here. Be very aware of your surroundings. These people are fanatical animals who feel the need to attack and kill any person who does not believe in their faith or their twisted, radical, perception of the Muslim religion. Be aware of where you are and of who is around you.

A history of the origin of the Police Arlington Burial grounds:Upon the Summit of "Victory Hill", hard by the "Eternal Camping Ground" of thousands of Union and Confederate Soldiers, is the beautiful "Police Arlington", the pride of the New York Police Force. On March 6th,1871 the Metropolitan Police Benevolent Burial Association purchased 38 plots, comprising 15,200 square feet, on the high ground in Cypress Hills Cemetery. In the same year a beautiful monument in granite and bronze was unveiled. The life size bronze figure surrounding the monument is that of Patrolman Lester Lewis, a member of the Broadway Squad (Traffic Squad), whose post of duty was Broadway and Duane Street. The original cost of the plot was over $10,000.
